Starlight Children's Foundation
Starlight Children's Foundation brightens the lives of seriously and terminally ill children by granting their wishes and providing hospital entertainment to help take their minds off the pain, fear and isolation of their illness.
When Starlight began in 1987, we helped just 4 children; this year, we will help over 250,000 children all over the UK. Where possible, mums, dads, brothers and sisters are involved to strengthen family bonds at what is often a time of great stress and give everyone happy memories to share, no matter what the future may hold. Starlight receives neither Government nor Lottery support. Six of those we have helped recently are pictured below:
| Georgia is ten years old and suffering from acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. She wanted to swim with dolphins and thanks to starlight her wish came true. | Matthew, aged 8, has acute myloid leukaemia and is very keen on computers. Thanks to Starlight he is now that proud owner of a laptop. | ||||
| Here we see clowns Tolly and Nina with a little girl at the Starlight Fun Day at Popham Airfield. Three hundred and eighty children suffering from a variety of illnesses were there with their families | Mickey is pictured here at Disneyland Paris with five year old Octavia. Octavia has spinal muscular atrophy, it was her wish was to go to Disneyland, meeting Mickey was an added bonus. | ||||
| Nine year old Matthew is another acute lymphoblastic leukaemia sufferer. You can see him here with an eagle on his wrist when he was granted his wish to see eagles fly in the wild. | Starlight have put over 800 "Fun Centres" featuring a Nintendo Game Cube, TV and a video DVD player in hospitals around country. |
If Starlight had just one wish itself, it would be that cures could be found for all the terrible illnesses that can afflict children. Until then, we will continue to provide important medicines of another sort: excitement, fun and laughter. Supporting the ICT Ball this year will help us fulfil our wish, your contributions can really help Starlight make a difference.
